mediation
Mediation entails a voluntary, consensual resolution process where a trained mediator facilitates communication and supports the participants in coming to a mutually acceptable agreement.
transformative mediation
Transformative mediation emphasizes underlying issues, unmet needs, miscommunication, and relevant impacts. It is a relational approach to resolving discord and can include formulating a mutually acceptable agreement, but holds the relationship dynamics at the center of the work.
equity-informed mediation
Equity-informed Mediation is the process of applying an equity framework to balance power and allow all voices to be heard, seen, and valued. When resolving issues that entail power differentials, Equity-informed Mediation centers on the impact of actions and speech before inquiring about intentions. It takes Transformative Mediation a step further, diving into elucidating the dynamics of unearned advantages, position and power, marginalization, and more. Getting to a mutually acceptable agreement isn’t possible when one part feels disadvantaged because of something they cannot change about themselves, such as happens within racism, Transphobia, ableism, ageism, genderism, classism, etc.
